On October 18, 2018, “Climate Change Awareness Day” was held for the secondary school students within the framework of the project “Go against Climate Change” carried out by Mersin Metropolitan Municipality, Mersin University and Association of Recycling Industrialists (GEKSANDER) within the scope of the “Grant Program of Capacity Development in the Field of Climate Change in Turkey” funded by the European Union and the Republic of Turkey, and of which main beneficiary is the Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation.
Deputy Secretary General of Mersin Metropolitan Municipality Mustafa Kemal Çokakoğlu also attended the event, which was held in front of the Vocational School of Technical Sciences of Mersin University Ciftlikkoy Campus.
“Protect your environment, don’t do what we do to you to the generations after you.”
In his speech at the event, he stated that in their childhood, toys were made of wood and stone. “We would be very happy if we found a plastic toy. Now you have computers at this age, right? But in our times, all the streams flowed. In our times, wild animals came up to the edge of the cities and lived there. The number of birds and flocks was much higher. But unfortunately, we lost many of our beauty today. We invented computers, we invented games, but unfortunately, we could not protect the environment. We could not bring you a proper environment.” said Çokakoğlu.
“We have to go against this. And we have to be very responsible, decent individuals to go against this. No matter who you are in your life, no matter what profession you have, no matter what you think and whatever your thoughts evolve to, always remain as a good person. If you become a good person, you will be respectful and sensitive to your environment. Protect your environment, don’t do what we do to you to the generations after you.” said Çokakoğlu, by stating that climate change is a phenomenon that reduces everything in the nature.
