IklimIN Project met with National Media at Istanbul Four Season Hotel on October 10, 2018. The topics of the meeting were “New Generation Climate Journalism” and “Climate Change Trends”.
52 media members from various national press organizations attended the meeting. Among the participants were Mete Çubukçu, the producer and presenter of the program “Pasaport” broadcasted on NTV, and Güven İslamoğlu, the producer and presenter of the programs “Yeşil Doğa”, “Seyirci Kalmayın” and “Çevre Dedektifi”, broadcasted on CNN Türk.
The meeting consisted of two parts. In the first part, “Your Climate”, the theme of the İklimIN Project awareness raising campaign was introduced to the press. T.R. Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation, Deputy Minister, T.R. Chief Negotiator for Climate Change Prof. Dr. Mehmet Emin Birpınar chaired the press meeting. The session started with the presentation of the project by IklimIN Project Team Leader Gaye Erkan.
Then, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Emin Birpınar gave information to the media members on the effects of climate change on Turkey and the works conducted by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation in this field. In the last part of the session, Birpınar introduced the awareness campaign to be held in 2019 with the theme of “Your Climate” to the national media.
In the second part of the IklimIN Media Meeting, media members were informed about “New Generation Climate Journalism” and “Climate Change Trends”. The first speaker was Dr. Ümit Şahin, Climate Studies Coordinator of Sabancı University, Istanbul Policy Center. Şahin, gave important information about the process of science/policy in the fight against climate change and its reflections in Turkey.
After that, Güven İslamoğlu from CNN Türk Television came to the stand and made an impressive presentation about climate change, green nature and media trilogy.
Assoc. Prof. Sema Cerit Mazlum, lecturer of Marmara University Faculty of Political Sciences Department of International Relations enlightened the participants on the Paris Agreement, which she called the new path of the international climate policy.
The last speaker of the session was Dr. Nuran Talu, Senior Policy Advisor of IklimIN Project, who gave information about Climate Journalism. In her speech, Talu described climate journalism as an area that has begun to develop and mentioned the important role of climate journalism in the fight in this field.
At the end of the meeting, the contributions of media members were received and their questions were answered. IklimIN Media Meeting ended with the closing speech of Diren Ertekin, Head of Climate Change Adaptation Department of the T.R. Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation Directorate General of Environmental Management.
