Workshop on the Effects of Climate Change on the Sea and Coasts of Antalya was held on December 15, 2017.
The activities under the European Project “Adaptation Project of the Sea and Coasts in Antalya to Climate Change” carried within the scope of the “Grant Program of Capacity Development in the Field of Climate Change in Turkey” of which coordinator is the Department of City History and Promotion of Antalya Metropolitan Municipality and project partner is Turkish Marine Research Foundation (TUDAV) on the invitation, upon the invitation of Central Finance and Contracting Unit (CFCU), continues. In line with these activities, “Workshop on the Effects of Climate Change on the Sea and Coasts of Antalya” was held on December 15, 2017 at Hotel Su between 9 am – 4 pm. 75 people from 35 different institutions participated in the workshop, where climate change in Antalya was addressed within the scope of expertise such as tourism, archaeology, engineering sciences, public health and biodiversity.
In the workshop, which was carried out within the scope of the 2-year project, which aims to prepare a risk management strategy of the sea and coasts of Antalya against climate change, representatives of different institutions and specialists discussed the problems and potential solutions all day long. In the morning session of the workshop, which started with opening speeches and specialists’ presentations, NGO representatives, academicians, metropolitan and district municipalities, relevant public institutions and sector representatives came together and worked in mixed groups. In this session, it was aimed to strengthen the dialogue between the institutions and to ensure that stakeholders understand each other. Challenges, opportunities and threats that could be faced in order to reveal the possible effects of climate change on the region were discussed with the participation of all stakeholders. In the afternoon session, the representatives of the institutions and the participants made more focused discussions about the current situation, potential risks, worries and the proposed priority areas in the thematic working groups formed about their specialties.
In the light of the evaluations made at the end of the workshop, priority needs will be identified and risk assessment reports will be prepared. In order to carry out joint studies within the scope of the project, which will last for two years, it has been ensured that the mechanisms to include public institutions, NGOs, private sector, especially tourism, and universities in the workshop have been established, and that people and institutions who want to work on climate change in Antalya meet each other and create networks.
